After the Apocalypse

Yasuaki NAKAJIMA

USA2005 72min Beta B&W Asian Premiere

Synopsis

After World War ¥², the world is ruined and nothing is left. The director’s premise is that four men and a woman are the survivors in the near future whose memories of all the past have been deleted. The film starts with a man who is taking off a gas mask, with a subtitle briefly explaining the background. Frightened rough breathing.... The guy wearing a gas mask drinks water by the riverside and finds another man. He shouts, but only an unintelligible murmuring is heard. You cannot hear any word until the ending. The film is based on the director's experience of a tour in Australia at a time when he couldn't speak English at all. The director, Yasuaki, leads the story using only the characters’ attempts at sign language, such as the expression of their eyes and their gestures. There are four people: a man wearing a goggle, another tall man with a leg injury, a juggler and a woman who draws pictures. They have their own character, share food and teach each other how to fish, and help each other for survival. There are always men with trouble. There is also always love when a man meets a woman. He even kills the other person to protect her. Also, there is conflict over authority. Is it the after-effect of war? A man is dying of a skin disease while a new life is born, so the instinct for survival becomes stronger. The film is very simple. Because there are no words, you can concentrate on the actors’ gestures and eyes. The BGM is played in the right scene as a messenger.
