Synopsis
Japan's new epic directed by Isao Yukisada, which solidified the director\'s position in the film community after his previous film, Crying Out Love In the Center of the World. The movie is about common people living their lives in the late 19th century, an era of change in the Japanese society. In 1868, the village people of Awaji are forced to migrate to the northern region of Hokkaido. Although the people try to find ways to survive under the rule of Hideyaki, they have hard time adjusting themselves to new culture and institutions, and the government's pressure. Japan's famous actress, Sayuri Yoshinaga played the leading role as Hideaki's wife, and the movie's production became the talk of the town when she personally requested Isao Yukisada to direct the film.
