Synopsis
Shing, a cop with questionable integrity in more ways than one, picks up girls each night and continues his casual lifestyle. One morning, he wakes up to find a young girl by the name of Yan, who could very well have been his partner for the night, looking at him. She has eyes of the women he once loved in the past. Or it could be that Macau, on the eve of its handover to China in 1999, has a blush as that on Yan\'s face, just as Hong Kong did in 1997. She then says Shing is her father and demands money saying father is not what she needs. As if to claim her rights as a daughter, she makes smooth intervention into Shing's life. Shing, for his part, has to demonstrate his ability as a cop by finding Yan's lost dog whose name is Isabella. The name of Shing's lost love and Yan's mother was also Isabella. Heavy air surrounds everything that disappears. The faded wallpaper decorating Shing's house and the streets of Macau, where Yan roams around drunk, and everything else has a face. Primary colors and cinematography and fascinating music lead us into 1999's Macau and the emotional bond created by the two people. The performance of the two actors that take the most part of the movie is beautiful. In addition, directorial skills of Pang Ho-cheung that imbue multi-layered meanings to the subject matter of a family encounter are simply outstanding. (KWON Yong-min)
