Synopsis
Amidst the roaring epidemic of expansionism, Imperial Army unexpectedly visit Taikan, Kiryu and Choaeyi's karate school. Commander threatens to take their master away. Three musketeers, despite their differing ideas, defeat the intruders, though with little peace of mind. With the solders gone, their master, facing demise, leaves the trio his #999999 belt. This fresh departure from mainstream martial arts fare offers no spectacular karate techniques, ambitious composition or breathtaking choreography. Even the duel scenes employ tenaciously static camera play and extended cuts, delivering surprisingly remarkable straightforwardness and elegance. The movie addresses life. Can't have it all. Talent, determination, wisdom... your pick? Choices the characters make, their paths interwoven, make us ponder: What is life's greatest value? Being clever doesn't necessarily mean silence or opportunism. (HUH Ji Woong)
