Synopsis
American Zombie is a record of zombie community living in L.A.; that is, a mockumentary. Documentary filmmaker 'Grace' teams up with 'John' to produce a documentary on the living dead. Among 5 to 7 thousand zombies in L.A., the camera follows day-to-day lives of normally functioning ghouls including a convenience store clerk, an artist channeling the spirit of the undead, and an unmarried mind who wants to get married, raise children, live a normal life. There is even a member of Zombie Advocacy Group fighting for zombie rights.
Award-winning filmmaker Grace LEE, famous for her directorial debut with The Grace Lee Project, taps humorously into the issue of minority portraying zombies that are not too distanced from the living. Unlike 'Grace' who tries to set aside her biases, 'John' seeks to uncover threatening aspects of the zombies reflecting the intolerance of the society. Grace LEE also criticizes the media with flawed approaches in American Zombie, which was received well in the Slamdance Film Festival and The Sitges Film Festival. (LEE Hwa Jung)
