Sophie FILLIÈRES

France2018 97min Asian Premiere

Synopsis

Margaux, 25, meets Margaux, 45. In circumstances as similar as their names, they feel much the same as each other. When a handsome ex-boyfriend turns up, a strange flow of air between the three leads to strange events.

Program Note

A fourty-ish Margaux(played by Sandrine Kiberlain) meets twenty-ish Margaux(played by Agathe Bonitzer) by chance at a party in Paris. Two different actresses are each playing their roles, but in fact these two ‘Margaux’ are the same person separated by a twenty-year gap. In spite of this surreal premise, When Margaux Meets Margaux is more of a subtle woman’s psychodrama than a science fiction film. The 20-ish Margaux is anxious about the undetermined future(or the present choices she has to make) that awaits her, and the 40-ish Margaux informs the younger Margaux of the outcome of her choices followed by a little advice she throws in. But their relationship and its impact is not unilateral at all. The 40-ish Margaux is also nervous about her fading youth, and moreover, in spite of the older Margaux’ counseling, it is ultimately up to the younger Margaux to make the final decision. When Margaux Meets Margaux is a film about a 20-ish Margaux imagining herself in her forties and the 40-ish Margaux looking back at her twenties. The delicate depiction of their psychological dialogue and self-examination of their mutual influence upon each other is one of the most interesting aspects of this film. (BYUN Sung-chan)
