World Fantastic Blue

The Real Estate

Axel PETERSÉN / Mans MANSSON

Sweden2018 88min Korean Premiere

Synopsis

Nojet inherits an apartment building, but soon realizes her cash cow is in fact a curse as the building turns on her. She seizes control again by becoming more ruthless than the surrounding businesses.

Program Note

A 68-year-old Nojet is chatting with her hairdresser at a hair salon. “It’s difficult to buy a house in Sweden if you weren’t born with a silver spoon in your mouth.” Nojet had the luck. After living in Italy on monthly allowances, she returned to Sweden and inherited an apartment building in Stockholm from her father to become a landlady. All she wants is to sell the apartment and to get hold of some money. While she inspects the building, she discovers that her half-brother and his son have poorly managed it. They even sublet to immigrants illegally. She can’t sell the building in that state. An old, female antihero who is against community and responsibility isn’t very amicable. In spite of excessive close-ups, it is hard to understand people in the film. The directing style isn’t kind but extremely creative. The film was introduced in the competition section at Berlinale 2018, and brought about diverse interpretations and responses. (Ellen Y.D. KIM)
