What the Waters Left Behind

Luciano ONETTI / Nicolás ONETTI

Argentina, New Zealand2017 98min Asian Premiere

Synopsis

A group of young people takes a trip to some ruins to film a ary about Epecuén, a badly flooded Argentinian city. However, when they realize they are not alone in the town, the real fear begins.

Program Note

A car carrying six men and women enters the rare Epecuen area. They are making a ary of finding ruined places and listening to the people’s stories. In the difficult-to-find resting place, They meet people with somewhat threatening impressions. In a hurry, they go out on the road after filling up the gas, but the car stopped on a soon. Someone breaks the gas hose. Somebody watches them while they are scattered and relax, waiting for help, with the car anchored. The existence of somebody is constantly implied through the point of view shot spying on the words and actions of the characters and the crane shot tracking their path. The reality of a suspended being is eventually revealed, but it also appears to be a viewpoint of no reality. The film combines the photographers with the images they shot, and the times of the existing characters gives the impression that they are turned into evidence of non-existence, like the found footage left by the dead. The presence of the camera in the film visualizes that the past is still affecting today and also denies and questions the current position of safely exploring the past. (KIM So-hee)
