Mutafukaz

NISHIMI Shojiro / Guillaume ¡°Run¡± RENARD

France, Japan2017 93min Korean Premiere

Synopsis

Angelino is just one of thousands of deadbeats living in the misery of Dark Meat City. Following a scooter accident caused by a mysterious girl, he starts getting violent headaches and weird hallucinations. Mutafukaz is based on Ankama's comic-book series.

Program Note

Angelino is one of many losers in D.M.C (Dark Meat City, not Digital Media City). In his apartment filled with trashes and cockroaches, he lives with his friend Vinz. When Angelino goes on a delivery with his scooter, he has an accident. Since then, he suffers from headache and hallucination, and his life has changed completely. He is chased by men in black suits, and realizes his remarkable power. Where does his superpower come from? Who is this evil group who chases after him and his friends? This is a collaboration between Guillaume “Run” Renard, the creator of the French mega-hit comic book series of the same title and director Nishimi Shojiro of Tekkon Kinkreet (2006). Angelino’s head is like a black billiard ball and Vinz’s head is a flamelike skeleton. These simple 2D characters are combined with detailed 3D backgrounds which look like the city of GTA games. The combination results in extremely speedy action and visual pleasure. The film has woven the conspiracy of alien invasion in Men In Black (1997) and the hidden secret of superhero’s births in an anarchistic manner. This is an adult SF animation for the generation who enjoyed pop culture and video games. (Ellen Y.D. KIM)
