From Beyond

Stuart GORDON

USA1986 86min

Synopsis

After discovering a way to access a parallel universe of pleasure, an obsessive scientist is killed by forces from this other dimension. His assistant, a psychiatrist and a detective in the case all return to the other dimension to solve the mystery.

Program Note

Mad scientist Dr. Edward Pretorius and his assistant Crawford create ‘The Resonator’ that opens a portal to interact in the creature-filled sixth dimension. During the experiment, however, only Crawford survives and is accused of murder by the authorities. His psychiatrist isn’t so sure, so she and a police detective take him back to the sixth dimension to figure out exactly what happened, not knowing the mayhem that’s about to happen. Based on the story by H.P. Lovecraft, From Beyond is director Stuart Gordon’s follow-up to a highly successful Re-Animator (1985), another of his Brian Yuzna - Jeffery Combs - Barbara Crampton collaboration. Ms. Crampton steals the scene as Dr. Katherine McMichaels, whose curiosity puts her in trouble in a perverse dimension. With From Beyond, Mr. Gordon has crafted a film that is probably the closest anyone has gotten to capture the nightmarish netherworld visions of H.P. Lovecraft on the screen. (Jongsuk Thomas NAM)
