Hair Wolf

Mariama DIALLO

USA2018 12min Asian Premiere

Synopsis

In a black hair salon in gentrifying Brooklyn, the local residents fend off a strange new monster: white women intent on sucking the lifeblood from black culture. Jury Award winner of 2018 Sundance Film Festival.

Program Note

A white woman comes to a black salon. She asks for Afro hairstyle, praising the beauty of African Americans. As African American staff members feel fearful of the lady taking endless photos, they are changed to be like Caucasians one after another like zombies. This film combines comedy and horror as it portrays the exaggerated attitude of a white woman who does not take black culture seriously and the fear felt by African Americans towards such attitude. It is also worth paying attention to the contrasting styles represented by Rihanna and Kylie Jenner. (YOO Hyun-ji)
