Three Women Under the Umbrella

Lee Doo Yong

Korea1980 118 min 35mm C

Synopsis

A film remarkable for the sophisticated urban sensibility of director LEE Doo Yong, whose 1970s action movies and 1980s erotic period dramas earned him industry attention. A master of genre movies, LEE conveys through careful editing the cat-and-mouse nature of relationships and the intricacies of the female psyche. This film also shows CHUNG Ae Ri and KIM Mi Suk at their youthful best. When Mi Yeong sees two women at her husband’s wake after his sudden death in a car accident, she intuitively senses his infidelity. Blaming his death on the two women, Mi Yeong plots revenge against them. The three women differ in both class and profession. Mi Yeong is a middle-class housewife with a sheltered upbringing. MIN Shin Ae, her husband’s friend from the orphanage, is a fashion designer who studied in Paris. KO Su Mi, who is a picture of naiveté, works at a bar. While the relationship among them is ambiguous, Mi Yeong experiences lives and spaces vastly different from hers and makes new discoveries about her husband while watching her two counterparts. Interestingly, her husband, CHUNG Myeong Jae, was an indecisive person who lacked the ability to express himself. His identity is revealed post-mortem through these three distinctive women, like a puzzle coming together. Once the puzzle is complete, the women emerge from the fantasy of CHUNG Myeong Jae and form a sympathetic bond. But Mi Yeong’s sudden assumption of guilt for her husband’s death betrays the intention to preserve the man’s innocence by blaming his infidelity on the woman. (CHO Hye Young)
