Ju-on: The Curse 2

Synopsis

The term ‘Ju-on’ means a curse cast by an individual who dies with strong, unresolved vengeance. The spite, as the story goes, accumulates in places inhabited by the dead, turning into karma. When a person comes in contact with the curse, his or her life is lost, begetting a new cycle of curse. Released with its predecessor (1999), Ju-on: The Curse 2 showcases a separate story, though using the same theme. A common thread through the video and theater renditions as well as the Hollywood remake is the “infectious” curse of Kayako, a character who has died with mega vengeance. Video and theater renditions are connected plot-wise, with some differences, obviously. While the two videos center around the curse, vengeance and victims involving Kayako, Shunsuke, and Toshio, the first theater rendition deals with the tragedy of a family who has moved into Toshio’s house. Both videos were received in awe, thanks to their non-stop tension-building and horrifying images of ghosts popping out from everywhere. After the success of the videos, director SHIMIZU and producer ICHISE set out to prepare a theater rendition which materialized in 2003. (KWON Yong Min)
