Rachel and Theo are ordinary teenager siblings. But their lives forever change when they stumble upon some unknown alien organisms in a ghastly deserted house. What they see are murderous Wilberforce, a kind of shape-shifting monsters living under the volcanic mountains in Oakland. To fight against them, Rachel and Theo find help from a mysterious Mr. JONES and their cousin Ricky. Also, the siblings decide to use the superpower given to them. Based on the same-titled bestseller by Maurice GEE, which was first published in 1979, earning huge popularity among teenagers, TV series were made in the early 1980’s prior to the 2009 film version produced by Weta Studios, New Zealand’s special effects powerhouse famous for The Lord of the Rings series, and director KING. Their dream collaboration was showcased in the comical monster-horror fare Black Sheep during the 2007 PiFan. The latest sci-fi adventure film offers a story entertaining to men and women of all ages, A-class special effects, and production execution surpassing that of Hollywood blockbusters — a testimony to the commercial potential of New Zealand films.
