Synopsis

ABBA, NEWTON-JOHN, DION . . . What do these legends have in common ¡ª obviously, beside being the legends? Timeless stardom? Wrong. A music contest, i.e., the Eurovision Song Contest (the 'ESC'). That's where they all started to build their career and fame. The ESC, still the most celebrated music festival in Europe, has been discovering and showcasing numerous gem stones of pop numbers and star artists even before the American pop culture "invasion" began. During its heyday, the show enjoyed such international popularity that it was even broadcast in Korea. Sounds Like Teen Spirit is a music documentary following a special journey and experience of talented young musicians who have made it to the finals of Junior Eurovision Song Contest, the ESC's junior division. The film faithfully documents A to Z of cutthroat regional competitions, as well as the process in which contestants endure hellish training to win the opportunity to get up on the stage and perform their best-ever. Stardom, however, is only a part of the message, although seeing their dreams come true is beautiful and touching in and of itself. The director reminds us of the war-torn history of Europe, peppered with confrontation and carnage, from ancient times to two world wars. Hopefully, the same tragedy will not repeat itself for the sake of the children, the future of Europe, the director implores. Perhaps, optimism is the real message? (MO Eun Young)
