Strange Homage

True Women for Sale

Herman YAU

Hong Kong2008 90 min 35mm C Korean Premiere

Synopsis

Think China after Hong Kong"s return. Oil and water, right? The century-old cultural and socioeconomic gap is glacial. This film by Herman YAU portrays a post-return era China and Hong Kong. As the title suggests, the story centers around two women making a living by "selling" themselves: a native of Hong Kong and prostitute; and a pregnant woman from China proper, married to a Hong Kong guy for citizenship. For them, life is difficult, though for different reasons. The "working girl" blames chicks from the mainland for stealing her pie. The girl from China laments she can"t hire a nanny because she is not a citizen. Welfare, after all, is for people of Hong Kong, not for the Chinese. Director"s perspective? Romantic. (Listen to the self-proclaimed guardian of the Chinese woman or the freelance photographer emphatic toward the prostitute.) Sounds familiar? Yes. We live with it, too, right here where we live.
