The word you"ll hear the most when watching Love Exposure by director SONO Sion is "hentai (pervert)". Self acclaimed refined pervert Yu has long since become a master in "filming up women"s skirts". This will be evident to anyone who sees him gracefully weaving around the streets like a dancer filming up women"s skirts. The movie, of which the main character is a "pervert", may itself be called "perverted" in that it is filled with imagination that is anything but ordinary. How he became a pervert was also peculiar. When his lover left him, his father, a priest, makes his son confess every day about whatever crime he committed. In order to please his father, Yu actually starts committing real crimes. After indulging in theft and violence he turns to "filming up women"s skirts". One day, Yoko comes into his heart, but his complicated situation prevents them from loving each other. As a perverted movie, Love Exposure is full of questions and skepticism about family, religion, growing up, sex and voyeurism. The film is also rich with brilliant talent, strange sense of humor and sudden violence. On top of this, the storyline is so strongly gripping that the 4-hour running time doesn"t feel long at all. The movie is even strangely touching by the end, because Love Exposure keeps reminding us that it is basically a praise to pure love. (HONG Sung Nam)
