France / UK / Belgium2008 100 min 35mm C Asian Premiere
Belgian director Fabrice DU WELZ debuted with the feature horror film Calvaire (2004) about a singer who gets lost in the mysterious woods. Vinyan is also about people who get lost. Mr. and Mrs. Belhmer lose their son in a tsunami. One day, after hearing news that their son is alive, they set out to look for him. However, their search takes them to a jungle, where they go through surreal experiences. Vinyan portrays a parent"s feeling of desperation upon losing a child. This is why the story is set in a jungle. The best parts of Vinyan are the opening and ending images where water, symbole of life, turns crimson red. Emmanuelle BEART, who stars as Jeanne Belhmer, shows a laudable performance as a person who slows becomes crazy. (HUH Nam Woong)
