Susuk

Amir MUHAMMAD / Naeim GHALILI

Malaysia2007 105 min Digibeta C Korean Premiere

Synopsis

Soraya, a nurse/aspiring singer, is unhappy with her life. One day she is introduced to “susuk,” a forbidden practice promising to fulfill one’s beauty and talent. She falls hard for it despite warnings from people around her. Suzana, another singer deeply involved in the cult and now entangled in black art, faces the fact that she has to pay a dear price for the fame and wealth she has achieved through the secret cult. The intertwined paths of these two women rush toward a shocking ending. Originally referring to a metal fetish popular during a pre-Islamic Malaysia, worn by many for healing or exorcism purposes, susuk was later condemned in Islamic Malaysia as an abomination. Transplanting the representative pre-modern era icon into the modern-day entertainment business, the film portrays a uniquely sensitive and terrorizing rendition of human desire. This controversial movie was released in Malaysia in 2008 and nominated for nine divisions including best picture, production design and cinematography at the 21st Malaysian film festival, winning best sound effects editing and poster awards.
