Synopsis

Hollywood versions of superheroes have been ruling the global box office for years, supposedly fighting for the world peace. However, superheroes don’t necessarily need to come from Tinseltown, or protect the States exclusively. The world is vast; heroes abound - arguably, they’re working around the clock to protect us against villains. A non-American superhero named Santos, a short, stocky, charmingly balding Spanish guy with a beer belly, is the main character of Santos, a Chilean director Nicolás LÓPEZ’s second feature film. The guy is a C-class cartoonist with very little chivalry or sense of justice. That ‘nobody’ somehow turns out to be a superhero from other world, as the director mixes up various elements of Western and Asian pop cultures ranging from comics, to superhero fares, to manga. Out of the question is comparison between the film’s somewhat coarse special effects and the cutting-edge Hollywood technologies. Still, its one-of-a-kind imagination - criss-crossing of real-vs-manga realities, a visitor from other world to enlighten the hero turning out to be a dung fly, etc. - is a delight in and of itself. Perhaps, a true hero is all about substance and not so much about appearance. (MO Eun Young)
