The 25th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival Confirms Fantastic Film School Lecturers, Participants, and Schedule Master class by 'American History X' director, Tony KAYE 100 participants from 17 countries, online classes from July 8-14 Graduates develop into budding filmmakers with impressive accomplishments �� Fantastic Film School lecture The 25th Bucheon International Fantastic Film School (BIFAN, Festival Director: SHIN Chul) has confirmed the lecturers and participants that will be joining this year's Fantastic Film School. The class schedule has also been fixed, and the program will be in session from July 8-14. Classes will be held online, in consideration of the COVID-19 pandemic. Fantastic Film School is BIFAN's genre film education program. Taking on the role of dean this year is Hanmac Culture Group CEO Jonathan KIM, who has produced/executive produced more than 30 films, including Piano Man (1996), A Promise (1998), Silmido (2003), To Catch a Virgin Ghost (2004), Monopoly (2006), and Jang-Gae: The Foreigner (2020). Eight film industry professionals - including (in alphabetical order) Todd BROWN, Evrim ESROY, Tony KAYE, KIM Wonkuk, Alexandre O. PHILIPPE, Kerry Deignan ROY, and Michelle SON - will be taking part as lecturers, with always thought-provoking film director Tony KAYE providing the master class. The lecturers will be teaching 100 participants from 17 countries. Tony KAYE is an iconic filmmaker/artist who has directed titles such as American History X (1998) and Detachment (2011). Producer Todd BROWN has made a name for himself with movies such as Blood Quantum (2019) and The Paper Tigers (2020). Hive Media Corp. CEO KIM Wonkuk has produced/executive produced films such as Inside Men (2015) Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum (2018), The Drug King (2018), The Man Standing Next (2020), and Deliver Us from Evil (2020). Director Alexandre O. PHILIPPE helmed Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on The Exorcist (2019), among other titles. More information about the lecturers can be found in the table below. The scale of Fantastic Film School has been greatly increased this year. In addition to the previous limit of 35 enrollees, a total of 65 students have been selected to audit the classes and more film education and networking opportunities will be offered. In consideration of the ongoing pandemic, the program will be making active use of online platforms. The classes will be taught on contact-free platforms, such as Gather and Clubhouse. BIFAN will also be uploading the lectures, which will be targeted for the Fantastic Film School participants, onto its official YouTube channel. Many Fantastic Film School graduates have developed into budding filmmakers, with several accomplishing great feats last year. 2016 graduate Mattie DO received the Best Co-Production Award at the 2020 International Film Festival & Awards Macao (IFFAM) for her film Entanglement. 2018 graduate Le Quynh AHN was awarded the Artekino International Prize from the 2020 Busan International Film Festival's Asian Project Market for her work as a producer on Who Created Human Beings. 2020 graduate Kinga GORAK's Sweater won an Ale Kino+ award in the form of a license purchase from the 2020 Animarkt Stop Motion Forum. Finally, The Girls are Alright by 2020 graduate Gwai LOU received the Best International Short Film Award from the 2020 AFA (Atlanta Filmmaker's Alliance). Fantastic Film School, hosted by BIFAN's Network of Asian Fantastic Films (NAFF), is the world's first genre film education and networking program. The diverse seven-day program has a practical-focused approach, with classes on genre film production, packaging, sales, distribution and more. The 25th BIFAN will be held from July 8-18. The 25th BIFAN Selects 40 Projects From 29 Countries for NAFF Project Market! Year-on-year increase of 8 countries and 21 projects, new and original projects stand out, series project Goliath, Route 1 among 6 projects selected for Work in Progress On May 24, the 25th Bucheon International Film Festival (BIFAN, Festival Director: SHIN Chul) announced the 40 official selections from 29 countries for this year's NAFF project market. The selections consist of 19 projects for It Project, 11 projects for Project Spotlight: Korea, 6 projects for Work in Progress, 2 projects for Nordic Genre Invasion, 1 project for Blood Window, and 1 project for Fantastic 7. Selected projects are listed in the table below. A total of 202 projects from 40 countries were submitted for consideration for this year's NAFF project market. This represents a year-on-year increase of 8 countries and 21 projects. The judges for this year included KIM Donghyeon (director, Merry Christmas), KIM Huiyeon (producer, Bound Entertainment), Ellen Y.D. KIM (chief programmer, BIFAN), MO Eunyoung (programmer, BIFAN), and EOM Yonghun (secretary-general, BIFAN). "There were many new and original projects, each captivating in their own way, that were about personal inner conflict, social irregularities, or were complex projects that merged several genres at once,” explained judge KIM Huiyeon. “I'm looking forward to everyone overcoming these difficult pandemic times, and watching these projects together, in their completed form, at BIFAN." This year, NAFF accepted submissions of series projects for the first time in its history. In order to keep pace with the rapidly changing digital media environment and the impact that the rise of OTT services has had on the production, distribution, and consumption of video content, series projects were screened, and Goliath from the Philippines was selected. The Work in Progress program was launched last year, with the support of the Seoul Business Agency. The program offers practical support to the Korean film industry, which is struggling due to COVID-19. The Work in Progress program, which offers post-production support (DI, sound mixing, DCP) to projects, selected a total of 6 projects this year, which is an increase from the three selected in the previous year. While NAFF is in session, filmmakers of the selected projects will be given the opportunity to meet with producers, investors, and distributors from all over the world who work with genre films. Like the previous year, the one-on-one business meetings will be conducted via an online platform during the NAFF session (July 8-13), to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Since launching NAFF in 2008, BIFAN has been operating the world's first project market for genre films and the Fantastic Film School. Over the years, a total of 65 projects have gone on to completion, including films such as The King of Pigs (2011), The Terror Live (2013), Eerie (2018), Motel Acacia (2019) and The Closet (2020). These films have been introduced to audiences from all over the world via international film festivals and movie theaters. The 25th BIFAN will be held from July 8-18. Greetings from Network of Asian Fantastic Films(NAFF) of BIFAN. First of all, we greatly appreciate your interest in our 2021 NAFF It Project. Many projects were submitted during the submission period and therefore, evaluation for selecting 2021 It Project is taking more time than we expected. After much consideration, we decided to postpone the announcement date of official selections from May 17th, Monday to May 24th, Monday. We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the postponement. STATEMENT BY THE KOREAN FILM FESTIVALS ON MYANMAR Korean film festivals support courageous resistance and protest of citizens and filmmakers of Myanmar. Korean film festivals express solidarity and encouragement to the people of Myanmar, standing in their brave steps towards democracy. The festivals strongly condemn the ruthless massacre against the peaceful protesters and insist for all the violence to stop. We also call for the immediate cease of searching and imprisoning of filmmakers who are trying to tell the truth in resistance to the coup. We urge the military to immediately cede its power to the rightful democratic government, chosen by its people. Korean film festivals condemn the violence against peaceful protestors that has led to numerous deaths, including that of the children. In particular, we express our strong support for the filmmakers in Myanmar who are raising their voices at the head of the civil disobedience movement that aims to peacefully restore democracy and protect human rights and freedom. The festivals stress the need to uphold democratic processes, refrain from violence, fully respect human rights and fundamental freedoms such as freedom of expression through arts. The festivals urge the military to immediately release all those detained arbitrarily including the members of the Government and to retrieve all-points bulletin on Myanmar filmmakers. Korean film festivals express our support for Korean civil associations and their efforts to engage other ASEAN countries in the dialogue, by urging each country to do everything in its power to pursue the democratic transition in Myanmar. The ongoing violence of the military in Myanmar brings us to vivid memories of the violence of dictatorship that took place in Korea not so long ago. Moreover, the bold actions of Myanmar filmmakers to regain democracy, peace, human rights, and freedom remind us of how the Korean filmmakers fought for freedom of expression in the past. We have not forgotten the filmmakers from around the world who stood with us at that time. Accordingly, Korean international film festivals reiterate our solidarity and support to the Myanmar filmmakers and their courage. The development of Asian cinema and the solidarity of Asia formed through cinema will realize alternative democratic values, further establishing a foundation for solidarity organizations to support and protect autonomy of cultural arts, freedom of expression and arts, and civic rights of the minorities. Korean film festivals stress the need to gather the wisdom of mankind regardless of the borders and overcome the crisis together. To this end, we raise global solidarity that respects the value of peace and democracy. We reiterate our support and solidarity to Myanmar filmmakers who are protesting the military violence in order to restore democracy. Korean film festivals will continue to stand with the filmmakers of Myanmar and their democratic aspirations.
