Synopsis

In Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand, there is a foreign school at Phuket Island teenagers of the upper middle class attend. A new student, Rainbow, transfers in. She becomes the center of attention because of the horrific death of a student at her old school. After being baptized with questions by her new friends, Rainbow spits out the truth: that the student died because of the phone number 999-9999. If you call this number after midnight and make a wish, it will undoubtedly come true. However, this story ends horribly because death comes looking for you in the end. Unable to overcome his curiosity, one teenager calls the number. Though he gets his wish the next day, a sports car, as it was foretold, he meets a most gruesome end. Having called the number as a joke, the friends start dying off one by one, until the last survivor is left, desperately trying to figure out this puzzle. follows the structure of the traditional gore/slasher movie of which the and series are representative. This is an interesting film that shows simultaneously the appeal and limits of borderless genre film made by Asian movie kids who have grown up watching Hollywood and Japanese films and videos. The most eye-catching aspect of the film is its high production value. It is so smooth that it would fit in nicely at any multiplex around the world as a summer horror blockbuster. It could be due to the tastes of American-educated director Peter Manus, but the conventional set of a high school that looks like any suburban American school, and the Thailand/Western biracial actors (whose popularity is on the rise in Thailand), strengthen this impression. The fact that no parents feature in the film is also very traditional. It is also worth noting that he controls the tension of the last 20 minutes, and its twist, masterfully, as well as the addition of supernatural elements. Uniquely Asian.(Kim Sang-hoon)
