Program Note

Born in Rome in 1936, Aristide Massaccesi became fascinated by the theater and cinema while helping his electrician father. His numerous pseudonyms were credited as director, he became known as Joe D’Amato, who would remain a legend for future B movie fans after he turned his attention to gothic gore and erotic films in the 1970s. Inferno Rosso: Joe D'Amato on the Road of Excess can be considered as the ultimate documentary about Joe D’Amato, the master of Italian B movies, with abundant materials based on comprehensive knowledge by Manlio Gomarasca, writer of Joe D’Amato Totally Uncut, and Massimiliano Zanin, a documentarist and expert in Italian films, and in-depth interviews. The documentary vividly tells that D’Amato’s infinite love for and dedication to cinema were the driving force for him to create the D’Amato world, which influenced everything from gore to Spaghetti Westerns and hardcore porn.
