Program Note

If Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction (1994) were to be shot again in Taipei with a younger generation cast, that could be Terrorizers. Mentioning such a star director is to praise Ho Wi Ding’s work. The tone of Terrorizers is quite different though. It follows the clumsy romance of four intertwined characters, but without humor. Ming Liang lives at his father’s friend’s house, whose daughter is Yu Fang, an insignificant stage actress. Though living under one roof, they never talk to each other. One day, Ming Liang slashes her at a train station where she was having a date with Xiao Zhang. The wound is minor, but she saw him attack her. When his face is shown on the TV news, he runs to turn himself in, insisting that Yu Fang is his ex-girlfriend. We wonder what really happened to them. Though fragmented and estranged, people still want to share the warmth of others, but when frustrated, they can inadvertently cause hurt. (Creta D. KIM)
