Program Note
A 3-part omnibus horror film directed by Fruit Chan (Made in Hong Kong (1998) and Little Cheung (2001)) , Fung Chih Chiang and Wesley Hoi Ip Sang. Tales from the Occult starts with Hoi’s shock value-packed The Chink, in which the discovery of a decomposed dead body builds into daily paranoiac disturbances that consume the living space of a woman with actual horror. Chan’s Dead Mall is a blend of the zombie and slasher genres set in the limited space of a shopping mall and viewed by the outside world via YouTube. Fung, the longtime screenplay writer who made his directorial debut with A Witness Out Of The Blue (2019), casts veteran actor Richie Jen as a mysterious character in his noir-ish The Tenement, in which the tales of a building’s tenants unravel. Fruit CHAN
Fruit CHAN was born in 1959, China, Chan is a director, screenwriter, and producer. He started his career as a director with critically-acclaimed Finale in Blood (1993) followed by awards winning Made in Hong Kong (1997).
FUNG Chih Chiang
Film director/scriptwriter from Hong Kong. He wrote the scripts of Shaolin Soccer (2001), Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons (2013), and The Mermaid (2016). The Mermaid nominated for 2017 Hong Kong Film Award for Best Screenplay. The Bounty (2012) is his directorial debut.
Wesley HOI Ip Sang
Wesley HOI Ip Sanghas been working in the film and television industry for the past 20 years, having taken part in Hollywood productions. After working in mainland China and Hong Kong, Hoi finally laid down roots in Macau, establishing his own company there to provide advertising and film production services.
