Kung Kai-chia is looking forward to the perfect wedding — for her and her family. But her three unmarried “leftover women” best friends are deeply suspicious of the groom.
Synopsis
Thirty-eight-year-old Kung Kai-chia is the oldest daughter of Kung Sheng-tang, a noted academic-turned-politician. She’s classy, beautiful, well-educated, and perfectionist. Believing that she has finally met “the one,” she is planning her ideal wedding with both a Chinese banquet to conform to the conventions and please her family and the romantic movie-like Western ceremony of her dreams.
To help her pull off this uniquely Taiwanese hybrid wedding, Kai-chia recruits her three unmarried best friends from university as her bridesmaids. These so-called “leftover women” include a cynical and perpetually single workaholic, a lesbian influencer and activist, and a flight attendant who enjoys flings all over the world. Among the conservative wedding guests, their unconventional lifestyles make them stick out like sore thumbs.
During the preparation, one thing leads to another. The three bridesmaids gradually discover that the seemingly impeccable groom actually has quite an unsavory past — and possibly even a dark political motive for marrying Kai-chia.
Creator's Statement
Weddings are important occasions all around the world. They’re the perfect setting to explore cultures, religions, and family ties, as well as high-flying emotions and conflict. As weddings are familiar to audiences everywhere, the wedding-comedy can safely be considered one of the film industry’s cornerstones.
Since Ang Lee’s The Wedding Banquet, Taiwan has seldom seen a feature film centering on a wedding. This film seeks to both fill the void and incorporate contemporary perspectives and female buddy-film genre elements. Exploring Taiwan’s unique cultural conflicts, family issues, wedding customs, and gender norms, it will be a feel-good movie that makes audiences laugh and think.
