Program Note

After being sexually assaulted by an elderly man in her neighborhood during childhood, Madeleine stops speaking and lives in silence. Her life takes a turn for the worse when she unwittingly gets into the car of a man named Tony. Tony makes her addicted to drugs and forces her into prostitution and she ends up losing one eye while resisting a perverted client. Deceived by Tony, she misses her parents’ final moments. Determined to seek revenge, Madeleine trains in shooting and martial arts. Thriller – A Cruel Picture Picture is a pioneering film merging female revenge films of a protagonist who endures sexual abuse and seeks bloody retribution with sexploitation. The violent portrayal of the female body serves both as a dramatic, psychological motive for revenge and as an unfiltered display of the exploitative strategies typical of the sexploitation genre. However, the film was subjected to 25 minutes of cuts by Swedish authorities due to its sexually explicit content and violence before it could be released. praised as the inspiration for Elle Driver in Kill Bill (2003), Madeleine’s revenge continued to influence subsequent works, including the 1970s classic I Spit on Your Grave (1978) and has become a prototype for 21st-century women’s revenge films reinvented by feminist appropriation.
