Program Note
‘Schirkoa’ depicts a totalitarian society where the central government’s powerful control is at work, and citizens wearing bread bags over their faces are called by numbers instead of names. 197A, who lives in the red-light district known as Blue District, has a girlfriend, 242B, who dreams of escaping to a free community of citizens who do not wear bread bags, rumored to exist on the outskirts of the city. 197A, who has long dreamed of rising in status by becoming a politician, is given the opportunity, but a meeting with the Committee of Intellectuals confuses him. After a chance encounter on the rooftop of a city building with a beautiful and confident female immigrant who has discarded her bread bag, 197A awakens and sets out towards the outskirts of the city. The film depicts a dystopian world reminiscent of the Tower of Babel from the Bible, where diverse races, languages, and cultures are mixed. It is an SF animation armed with sharp satire on totalitarian society, religion, and civilization, and with free-spirited and cult imagination. The film features an impressive cast of voice actors and is the first film to use the game engine ‘Unreal Engine’ in its production. (KIM Young-woo)
