Program Note
In the aged ‘Villa Wonjung,’ ordinary neighbors reside. Their desires are also quite ordinary: they hope that redevelopment is approved soon so they can live in a modern apartment, and they dream of skyrocketing property values to turn their lives around. Reflecting this, towering high-rise apartments behind Villa Wonjung stand as a formidable symbol of the residents’ future aspirations. Their desire for these apartments takes on a religious fervor, leading the residents to be swayed by Shin-hye from unit 303 into a pseudo-religious cult. However, Shin-hye’s true desire lies elsewhere. She is convinced that if only her sick son could be healed, she would devote herself entirely to God, using this belief to deceive her neighbors. Joo-hyun from unit 203, who has always had a strained relationship with Shin-hye, becomes suspicious of her odd behavior. Upon discovering that his own mother has also been drawn into the cult, he is horrified. The Unrighteous, structured as a horror genre piece, provokes psychological fear rather than relying on visual horror effects, making it all the more terrifying because of its high plausibility in real-life situations.
