Program Note
Darcy is the owner of a curio shop, grieving the death of her twin sister a year before. She is also a blind psychic who wishes to seek the truth behind her death and seek justice in any way she can. Darcy visits her sister’s ex-husband Ted, a medical doctor who lives in a rural cabin and is now newly engaged to his co-worker. She also brings an unusual artifact, a wooden mannequin that’s been around for generations in her family, and things begin to get strange.
Oddity is the second feature by Irish director Damian McCarthy, whose debut film Caveat (2020) was also shown at BIFAN in 2021. Just as in his debut, Mr. McCarthy uses a clever mix of jump scares and psychological horror to create one of the most terrifying films in recent years. A terrific performance by Carolyn Bracken in the dual role of twin sisters further aids in the terror. (Jongsuk Thomas NAM)
