Program Note
The dynamic and exciting growth of the Indonesian film industry in recent years has been led by the superhero genre. The start of this genre can be attributed to Gundala directed by Joko Anwar in 2019. Another film that contributes to the development of the Indonesian superhero universe, alongside Gundala, is Sri Asih, directed by Upi, who also contributed to the screenplay. When discussing the Indonesian superhero genre, an important point to note is that it is based on comic books, similar to Hollywood’s Marvel and DC. Behind this ambitious endeavor was “Sinematik BumiLangit”, which holds over 500 comic book characters. However, when looking back at the history of Indonesian action films, there has been a longstanding tradition of adapting comic books into movies since the 1970s. A recent natural outcome can be seen as the result of talented directors meeting advanced film production technologies. The protagonist, “Sri Asih”, first appeared in Indonesia’s first-ever superhero comic book, written in 1954, and the interesting part of this film is the superhero is the very first female superhero character to appear.
