Program Note

Cami boards late-night rideshare to her dad’s cul-de-sac place upon arriving at the airport. She becomes increasingly suspicious of her driver named Spencer, whose odd behavior and awkward conversing unsettles her. Tension escalates when the car breaks down on a secluded road, and it soon turns into full-blown terror with both Cami and Spencer realizing they may not be alone and must seek a survival with two strangers working together.

The Toll is an effective feature directorial debut by Michael Nader, who combines the real-life horror with supernatural means. Relatable horror tales involving rideshare are all common and when it’s added with the element of ‘Toll Man,’ the film becomes nightmarish journey for the characters and the viewers alike. Mr. Nader leaves it up to two young strangers to build up the tension and carry out this unexpected gem, with Jordan Hayes playing frightened Cami, and Max Topplin stealing the show as socially-awkward Spencer.
