Program Note

The Bastard and the Beautiful World is a film that appeared with SMAP’s three members, Kusanagi Tsuyoshi, Inagaki Goro and Katori Shingo from Johnny’s Four directors Including Sono Sion directed strange stories of somewhat weird people in an omnibus format. There are three different stories, but they end up at the same place.One is about a pianist and a woman who is running as fast as she can. Another is a musician who cannot sing and a little girl who eats songs to live.  The other is about a married couple who are out to find the right arm of their deceased son. Although the film takes advantages of SMAP, the famous group, the talents of the three members are astonishing. Katori is innocent, Inagaki is usually day dreaming but has creative ideas, Kusanagi is naive but his acting is outstanding. They have to create their own brand, not as SMAP but as three individuals combining their talents. The Bastard and the Beautiful World shows what their personality is and what they can show and do. The film helps each character demonstrate their skill. The movie is complicated but attractive at the same time. That is enough to feel good about this film. (KIM Bong-seok)
