Logline

So-hee, an icon of misfortune, has been haunted by strange nightmares since the age of five. After her engagement to the first son of a head family that boasts a long-maintained reputation since Joseon Dynasty, she visits soon-to-be in-laws. There, she faces a curse from the evil spirits around their family and changes her own fate.

Synopsis

So-hee teaches Korean literature at high school as a temporary instructor.

Hoping to get a permanent position, she constantly works on her teaching materials, only to be scolded by a senior teacher: “Please don’t step up!” Due to the multiple “crimes” she committed—introducing a new question format in the final exam and accidentally making a new student as the top scorer of the test, advising the former top scorer’s parent to beware of a car accident while being berated for what she has done for the exam, and leaving the class to help a bullied student—she is unfairly discharged.

However, So-hee is not a stranger to this unfairness and pointlessness of life. There are two interesting things about So-hee’s life. First, her life strangely never goes well. Second, she has had nightmares since the age of five, occupied by goblins, monsters, and ghosts, full of events.

Failing the entrance exam for art school, failing the teacher employment exam, poverty, her mom suffering dementia… Having enough of real-life burdens, So-hee is terrified by these incomprehensible dreams.

It’s not like she is going to be possessed or have a mental problem. But a terrifying number of events in these dreams have happened in her real life as well. A shaman once told So-hee, “You are fated to die young. Be grateful that you are still alive!” This has fueled her anxiety about her fate. So, losing a job she worked so hard for is not even such a big deal. However, anguish and anxiety are growing inside her.

While searching for a part-time job, So-hee receives a dream-like offer. The school principal who fired her (from a year-long temporary job) suddenly sets her up for a blind date—with a man who would be classified as top tier by matchmaking companies.

At first, So-hee doesn’t expect much. To her, marriage is a luxury.

It turns out on the date that Gang-jin is more than perfect. He is from a head family with wealth and reputation, carrying the tradition from Joseon Dynasty. His mother runs a foundation that owns multiple private schools. Her second son is a lawmaker, and her third son works as a doctor at his mother’s foundation-owned hospital. And her first son, Gang-jin, is a handsome stockbroker at a leading financial company.

What’s more—this dream boat family wants So-hee to be their family so bad!

The unfortunate past and the unstable present may have been all for this upcoming compensation. Full of hopes and dreams, So-hee visits an old house where her soon-to-be in-laws are living. The family residence is a beautiful house that maintains the tradition as well as the modern sophistication. Just finishing their three-year mourning for Gang-jin’s father, the family is preparing for an ancestral rite to carry on the family line.

But So-hee soon finds out—why she was chosen as the daughter-in-law, why she has been haunted by the nightmares since five, why she could stay alive even after so many misfortunes. These are not just coincidences but her fate.

So-hee learns that she is the key to lift the curse that has been placed on this family for over 400 years.

Creator's Statement

This is a story of a woman called So-hee, who can only find darkness and misfortune in her life, even if she tries to find the meaning and value of life.
As the story begins, she goes through a tough and bloody week while she visits her parents-in-law before her marriage, facing the evil curse on their family.
After that, she eventually realizes the life lesson that there has been no protection from the guardian angels in her lonely and gloomy reality, but at least there has been a silent protection of the guardian souls, who are armed with a stronger grudge than just good intentions.

By showing the growth of the protagonist, I would like to convey the message that every life is worthwhile in their own way.
