Program Note

The title Cabriolet refers to a type of convertible. It’s like a symbol of freedom, heading excitedly down the road. This is not the case for Jia. She bought a cabriolet with all she had for one last trip. She worked hard and saved her money to be happy, but was then diagnosed with cancer. Is this how life is? She tries to seduce her ex-boyfriend to have sex one last time and say goodbye to the world, but she meets a mysterious guy, Byeongjae, on a peaceful country road. Horror films generally focus on the killer’s actions, or maximize the genre pleasure of killing. Cabriolet defies such rules. After spending a considerable amount of time on the story of why Jia no longer wants to live, the film completes a horror that doesn’t seem like a horror with a development that makes her want to live again while being chased by the perpetrator. Therefore, instead of being scary, Cabriolet makes us root for Jia, who is like a dying ember. (HUH Namwoong)
