Program Note

The world is divided into two parts: ‘The Building city’ where the rich live, and the ‘Hachon’ where the poor live. Living in the ‘Building city’ with her family, Yuji dreams of moving to ‘Hachon’ one day. If she goes there, she might meet Seojin, who suddenly disappeared. Yuji’s parents can't accept a reduction in wealth and are obsessed with their present lives. Yuji’s siblings are also troublesome. Yuji's empty daily routine is shattered one day when a huge tornado hits both the city and the countryside.

Director Kang Dayeon's debut feature film Hunger is a sci-fi construct that unravels a girl's desire to escape her meaningless life and from her family, to find a precious person she cares about. The world is divided into rich and poor, and the family only has its name. Other than this divided world, isn’t there somewhere Yuji can find her true self and the one precious thing she really wants? The Tornado may have ended this absurd world, but meetings with unidentified beings and Yuji’s adventure to find her true self is about to begin. (MO Eun-young)
