Synopsis

November is based on Estonian author Andrus Kivirähk's bestselling cult novel, Rehepapp ehk November. Set in a pagan Estonian village, where werewolves, plague and spirits abound, Rainer Sarnet's feature film is a bold and twisted tale of unrequited love.

Program Note

In the 19th century Estonia, a village is inhabited by spirits, werewolves, devil as well as kratts made of farming tools and animal skeletons. An aristocrat plays Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata in his pale, gloomy face, and his beautiful daughter sleepwalks into the woods every night. Villagers steal things from the aristocrat, and sell their souls to earn the kratts. A plague strikes the village in the forms of beautiful woman, a goat and a pig, and people use their wits to avoid the plague. A peasant girl, Lina uses a dark magic to get Hans back, who is in love with the daughter of the aristocrat. However, time and destiny are too harsh for dreamers. Based on the Andrus Kivirähk’s novel, the film depicts the world of magic and myth before the Christian order rules the world. Black and white images make this imaginary world and people more mysterious. This odd, beautiful story was selected as Estonia’s submission for the foreign language Academy Award this year.
