Program Note

The only pleasure for a little girl Joe, who has been hospitalized in a pediatric ward for a long time, is to watch a movie. Mike, who runs a small theater in the village, has been on the trips to show movies to the children of pediatric disease. Even Chinese martial arts movies with his tasty narrating are familiar to children. Legendary star Bruce Lee in martial arts films is like Joe’s superhero, except for the fact that he already died. Joe’s mother finds out that not much time is left for her daughter and brings Joe home to spend the last time together. Joe’s older sister and village folks make a good lie for Joe who believes he is a superhero. ‘How to think about death’ is one of the key points of this film. Instead of recognizing death as a practical limitation that hinders the realization of fantasy, the film portrays death as a power to meet fantasy and reality. In the film, the real fantasy comes not from the head of Joe, who dreams of a superhero, but from a clumsy play in which the whole village joins for a girl. It is an innocent film to remind you that the process of going to fantasy in realistic conditions is fantasy itself. (KIM So-hee)
