Boys Cry is a gangster film set in the suburbs of Rome. Mirko(played by Matteo Olivetti) and Manolo(played by Andrea Carpenzano) are in their final years of high school. After killing a man during a early morning pizza delivery, they choose to run instead of turning themselves in and eventually join the local mafia. The story of desire and bravado follows, but the naïve young boys’ fates are propelled towards a tragic ending that is already pre-destined by the gang. However the basic format of this familiar genre is not all that Boys Cry is about. The power of this film doesn’t lie in its depiction of the cruel nature of the crime world, but its gritty but delicate take on the inner currents that shake the souls of the two boys who set foot in this world by mistake. The merciless rules of gangsterhood are not just what caused the expected tragedy of the two boys in Boys Cry . The film finds the young boys’ youthful and pure souls as the starting point of their tragedy. Such pureness is something their fathers have already forgotten and their mothers still keep in their hearts. (BYUN Sung-chan)
