Program Note

This dark thriller revolves around dangerously true fundamentalist politics and patriarchy. Taxi driver Phanishwar, one day meets a young woman who is a victim of leaked revenge porn. He becomes her driver, whilst secretly stalking her online.

Program Note

Rami escaped to the countryside as a victim of revenge pornography. She is suffering from what is not her fault at all. Phanishwar keeps a woman chained up and works her like a slave. Rami goes to an accommodation to stay for a while by taking a taxi driven by Phanishwar. He recognizes who Rami is, and he secretly stalks her. Garbage is a story about a man and a woman. In the beginning, they do not relate to each other directly; they are just a driver and a passenger. However, the social relationship between the victim, Rami, and the perpetrator, Phanishwar, is complicated. Their relationship entwines directly only when the conflict they face in the society gets extreme. Rami, the victim, chooses Phanishwar as one of the common male perpetrators, and then kidnaps and tortures him. He can become a perpetrator just for the reason that he is a man. Phanishwar is, in reality, an assailant who oppresses and assaults a woman’s body. Rami’s violent behavior does not look like an ndividual’s deviation at all. Garbage restructures the relationship between every man and woman of India, and to go further, the world, in light of violence. (KIM Bong-seok)
