Program Note

A world-renowned conchologist on a remote island cures a female painter’s rare disease, and the outside world descends upon the island for the miracle. Based on the original novel by Anthony Doerr, Lily Franky plays the main role of conchologist in the film.

Director

TSUBOTA Yoshifumi

Born in 1975, Japan, Tsubota directed his short film Big Spectacle in 2000 while studying at Tama Art University. This short film was invited to numerous film festivals. His first feature Miyoko (2009) was invited to many film festivals including Rotterdam and Fantasporto where he won Special Mention for Directors’ Week. The Shell Collector is his second feature.
