The desire for vivid visual contents has become a motivating force behind the innovation and progress of motion picture technology. Virtual reality, or VR, is undoubtedly an important focal point in the development of such technologies. Virtual reality holds the attention of many filmmakers for its ability to present an experience that approaches the threshold of human visual perception. Alejandro González IÑÁRRITU's VR movie, Carne y Arena, was invited to the Cannes Film Festival this year, and the Venice Film Festival will be introducing a VR competition section for the first time this year. Virtual reality also holds significance in terms of industry. It represents a new breakthrough for the home electronics industry - which had been facing limitations in terms of growth - and has been emerging as a source of hope for the gaming, theme park, and recreation industries.
This year, BIFAN intends to delve into the significance of VR in terms of both film aesthetics and its impact on the industry. New Media will explore VR's potential for the medium of film by looking at VR movies that have been made in Korea and other countries around the world. It will also examine VR's industrial significance by studying the various ways that the technology has been used.
