On the 26th, SHIN Chul, Executive Director of the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN), participated as a panelist in the international conference
“AI and the Future of Filmmaking”, co-hosted by the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia (SSFF & ASIA)—the largest short film festival in Asia—and Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs. During the session, he presented key agendas on the present and future of AI-driven film production.
The conference gathered ten leading experts in the field of film and AI, including filmmakers, screenwriters, media strategists, film festival directors, programmers, and curators from the United States, France, Germany, Mexico, Iran, and Senegal. The panel engaged in an in-depth discussion on how AI is reshaping filmmaking methods, creative ethics, and artistic expression, and how these changes may define the future of cinema.

During the discussion, Executive Director SHIN stated, “AI has established itself as a new language and creative tool shared among filmmakers around the world. It is not merely a tool for efficiency, but a companion that expands human creativity and enables new forms of storytelling. In the future, film appreciation will evolve beyond the traditional one-way experience of watching a film in theaters. It will become a higher-dimensional, interactive experience where audiences and creators communicate and co-create stories together.”
He added, “AI’s creative potential and versatility are limitless. Amid such changes, film festivals and filmmakers must collaborate to establish and advance shared ethical standards.”
Celebrating its 27th edition this year, SSFF & ASIA is Japan’s leading short film festival, dedicated to nurturing emerging filmmakers and expanding the creative possibilities of short cinema. The main festival takes place every June, followed by a special autumn program featuring an international conference and encore screenings of award-winning works.
