Program Note

Working mother Ji-sun is raising her daughter Da-eun alone while fighting a custody battle. In search of a nanny, she hires Han-mae, a Korean-Chinese woman. Ji-sun gradually comes to rely on the devoted Han-mae. But one day, Han-mae disappears with Da-eun. Determined not to be put at a disadvantage in her custody dispute with her ex-husband, Ji-sun sets out to find her daughter and Han-mae herself. Thus begins her arduous journey. Missing: The Other Woman may initially appear to be a thriller grounded in maternal instinct, but as it approaches the truth behind the case, it intersects with themes such as class issues in Korean society. Beneath its genre surface lies a sharp social consciousness. As audiences follow the narrative’s suspense, they are also confronted with a critical perspective on society—both a defining edge of director Lee Eon-hee’s work and a distinctive strength of the genre. Uhm Ji-won and Gong Hyo-jin deliver performances that go beyond exceptional. (KIM Hyung-seok)
