Program Note

Few genres in Korean cinema feature as many women as the historical film, yet few have been as reluctant to place women behind the camera. In that sense, KIM Mi-jung’s Shadows in the Palace is a pioneering work: the first female-centered narrative in the historical genre directed by a woman. Its gaze is unsparing and chilling. The film begins with the death of a court maid. As Cheon-ryeong, a court physician, investigates the case, she uncovers what has been concealed, only to find herself drawn ever deeper into a labyrinth and, finally, into the heart of a vast secret. Shadows in the Palace offers little of what one might conventionally expect from a historical drama about court women. Instead, it reveals the brutal codes that govern their world, the transgressions against those codes, and the suffocating atmosphere of a closed society. The ensemble of female actors generates an overwhelming aura. The film’s Jwiburi Geullyeo sequence—a public punishment staged to enforce discipline among the court women—remains one of the most unforgettable scenes in Korean historical cinema.(Kim Hyung-seok)
