Program Note

Before films such as Seven Days (2007) and The Chaser (2008) arrived, actor-turned-director PANG Eun-jin’s first feature, Princess Aurora, demonstrated the cold, unsettling power of the thriller and foreshadowed the genre boom to come. A series of murders unfolds, each marked by a Princess Aurora sticker, yet the victims appear to have nothing in common. Who is behind these brutal killings, and why? Princess Aurora is both a maternal drama and a revenge tale. UHM Jung-hwa, once known as a dazzling pop performer and the sweet romantic lead of romantic comedies, appears here as the saddest mother in the world—and as a warrior who takes on the world itself. One by one, she eliminates those responsible for the tragedy. Taking aim at the failures of public institutions and social indifference in the face of individual suffering, Princess Aurora charges forward with raw, headlong force.(Kim Hyung-seok)
