Program Note

LEE Byeong-heon’s comedies move at a tempo about half a beat faster than most. This is true not only of the pace of the dialogue, but also of the way situations unfold and scenes shift; it has become the director’s signature rhythm. Extreme Job is the film in which this style aligns most perfectly with popular taste. Its modest(?) premise—detectives facing disbandment try to bring down a drug ring—may not sound especially compelling on its own. Yet the countless details that enliven the story, the meme-worthy lines, and the sharp back-and-forth between characters keep audiences laughing from beginning to end. A film that charges straight ahead in pursuit of laughter. There has never been a comedy quite like it.(Kim Hyung-seok)
