Program Note

After releasing Kilimanjaro in 2000, director OH Seung-uk was long associated with numerous rumored projects that never materialized. Fifteen years passed before his second feature finally arrived. The Shameless is a hard-boiled noir with a woman at its center—and, in its own way, a devastating melodrama. JEON Do-yeon’s performance is especially striking: at once “cool” and “hot,” it cannot be measured by something as simple as a Best Actress award. It is the kind of presence only an actor at the height of her powers can create. A detective takes a job at the bar where the girlfriend of a murder suspect works in order to get close to the suspect. Their uneasy relationship persists, but gradually begins to unravel. OH wastes nothing—not emotion, action, or dialogue. His camera, precise rather than showy, captures the characters’ feelings with meticulous control, while subtle mise-en-scène and lighting establish the film’s distinctive genre tone. It's quiet, lingering ending stays long in the memory. KIM Nam-gil delivers one of the film’s most compelling performances.(Kim Hyung-seok)
