After making his debut with The Big Swindle (2004), director CHOI Dong-hoon moved from the world of con artists to that of gamblers in his second feature, Tazza: The High Rollers. Adapted from HUR Young-man’s manhwa, Tazza continues to resonate across generations two decades after its release; its scenes, dialogue, and characters have become enduring fixtures of Korean meme culture. Its greatest strength is an intensity that makes its considerable running time seem to vanish in an instant. This comes from its vividly realized characters, brought to life through the actors’ superb performances, and from the memorable dialogue that emerges from their interactions. No character, no matter how small the role, ever feels extraneous. Tazza: The High Rollers remains one of the most tightly constructed and relentlessly suspenseful genre films in Korean cinema.
