Program Note

When Save the Green Planet appeared 23 years ago, pushing Korean genre cinema to its outer limits. Its achievement lies not simply in the number of genres it combines, but in the force with which it binds them together. It is, first of all, a science-fiction film about aliens—and an action film. It contains wire-fu sequences, police procedural scenes, and thriller-like chases. At times, it evokes Hitchcockian suspense; at others, it generates a deep sense of mystery. The relationship between Byung-gu and Su-ni even carries traces of melodrama. The film also incorporates documentary-style passages and borrows from horror conventions. Above all, however, it is a black comedy built on absurd situations. It also quotes from countless films. Yet this multilayered text never fractures into competing directions; instead, it drives forward with tremendous force toward a singular emotional destination. Few Korean films are as enraged by the world, as wounded by it, and as compassionate toward it as Save the Green Planet. It remains a singular hybrid genre film, propelled by an imagination that resists easy imitation.(Kim Hyung-seok)
